Ingredients

24 slices or sections of assorted fresh fruits, such as tangerines, tangelos or clementines, Asian pear, Bosc pear, pineapple, Granny smith apple, organic strawberries with tops, or thick slices of banana.

4 ounces organic dark chocolate, chopped

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Preparation

Pour chocolate into 3 shallow soup bowls.

Stir cinnamon into one bowl, cardamom into the second and cayenne pepper into the third.

Dip one side of each slice or section of fruit into chocolate.

February is Heart Month…
Sponsored by the American Heart Association

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men living in the United States. Living a heart healthy life can decrease your risk for heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Your heart health depends on your weight, amount of exercise, nutrition, and family history. We cannot control our family history but we can control weight, exercise, and nutrition. Losing weight and aiming for more exercise are the most important factors for a healthy heart. Plus, what we eat can lead to better heart health. A “heart healthy diet” includes foods that are low in fat, cholesterol, and sodium. These tips can help you choose heart healthy options:

Eat less of the fats known to increase your risk for heart disease such as saturated and trans fat. Examples: fried foods, donuts, fatty meats, and poultry with the skin on it.

Eat more foods high in the “healthy” types of fat such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat. Examples: fish, olive oil, avocado, nuts, and seeds.

Limit excess salt by going easy on the saltshaker. Also, eat less canned vegetables, frozen dinners, and foods that are pickled or soaked in brine.

Eat a meal plan low in cholesterol by eating more plant-based foods such as nuts, oil, and peanut butter instead of animal-based foods such as dairy products, meat, and cheese.

Following the guidelines above will help you reduce your risk of high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Both health problems increase your risk for heart problems. Eating food high in saturated or trans fats increases your risk for high cholesterol, especially the “bad” LDL cholesterol.

Additionally, the amount of salt you eat may affect your blood pressure by causing you to retain excess water. It is important to get your cholesterol and blood pressure checked regularly by your physician.

To lower your risk for heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke, follow these 3 rules:

Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.

Aim for physical activity on 5 days of the week for at least 30 minutes.

Follow a heart healthy diet!
